I, TOO, SING AMERICA

Music and poetry inspired by America’s Black and Jewish cultures

Students and faculty from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance showcase the contributions of two vibrant minority communities, centering on the tumultuous era of America in the 1920s and ‘30s. Their program includes both folk music and songs by such composers as George and Ira Gershwin – music that came to represent America throughout the world. Curated by Kathryn Goodson, University of Michigan collaborative pianist and coach, this program takes its inspiration from the 1926 poem by Langston Hughes titled “I, Too, Sing America.”

This program will feature a special appearance by legendary tenor, George Shirley emeritus professor at the University of Michigan.

DAVE BENNETT AND FRIENDS
Jazz and swing for clarinet, bass and percussion

Returning for his second appearance in the Vivace Music Series, clarinet sensation Dave Bennett combines the swing sound of Benny Goodman with his own 21st century flair. Bennett, whose jazz trio plays for sell-out crowds throughout metro Detroit, has also appeared as an orchestral soloist, including eight concerts with the Detroit Symphony. His European debut in 2008 was showcased on National Public Radio’s “Jazz at Riverwalk.” His recordings, on Mack Ave. Records, include original compositions in jazz, blues, swing, gospel and pop styles, as well as beloved jazz standards.
