A WARM COMMUNITY...

WITH A UNIQUE PHILOSOPHY!

Our founder, Rabbi Sherwin Wine, used to call our Temple membership a family. And indeed, members of The Birmingham Temple have long considered this community to be an extension of their own families. They find it to be a warm and welcoming place to explore their values, celebrate and struggle with the concerns of everyday life, feel connected to Jewish heritage and create enduring relationships along the way.

The Birmingham Temple offers educational programs for children and adults, cultural holiday and Shabbat celebrations, life cycle ceremonies, social action opportunities, rabbinic pastoral care and wonderful clubs and committees. Those are all crucial to the health of any congregation and our members love to participate.

But what makes The Birmingham Temple really special is our congregation’s Humanistic philosophy. It is the real reason why people invest in membership.

Humanistic Judaism at The Birmingham Temple features a unique combination of adherence to universal Humanistic values coupled with an appreciation that Jewish culture adds value to our lives.

As a community, our philosophy has an important practical impact. It is responsible for the sense of belonging and identification that our members feel with the congregation. For this is a community that lives its values:

  • We welcome anyone who identifies with the history, culture and future of the Jewish people. We believe in the ability of Judaism - the evolving civilization of the Jewish people - to adapt and change as the times demand.

  • We believe that ethics and morality are human concerns that must serve human needs. We believe that humanity alone possesses the power and responsibility to shape our lives and societies, independent of supernatural authority.

  • We believe in the freedom of people to choose their own paths in life as autonomous individuals who serve as their own ultimate authority.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE OPPORTUNITY
