Shabbat Celebrations
Jewish history can easily be interpreted as a history of victims. However, there are many overwhelming examples of disobedience and uprising against oppression. Thousands and thousands of Jews refused to cooperate in their own oppression. This is the time of year to recognize them. This Shabbat falls between Passover, during which the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising occurred, and Israel Independence Day. During the evening Nathan Fuchs will honor and explore Jewish freedom fighters. Dignity will be the theme of the service.
Join us for sax, drums, guitar, piano, flute, and vocals as we sing out the Shabbat. During the evening Rabbi Kolton will give a creative sermon on, “The Future of Judaism.” She will explore questions like: Is Jewish survival really at stake? Is intermarriage a threat to the Jews? What might the Jewish community look like in 100 years? Personal Power will be the theme of the evening!
There is a saying, “After the final, ‘no,’ there comes a, ‘yes,’ and it is upon that, ‘yes,’ which the future of the world depends.” In every generation there are people of greatness who refuse to accept the status quo. They are people whose vision of what the world should be starts in their minds but continues with their hands and feet as they work on that vision day in and day out. They are people who see above the crowd and around the bends in the road. During this evening the congregation will honor Douglas Ross as a, “Humanistic Jew with Vision.” Doug Ross will speak about his life and his humanism, his work, and his continued vision for a better state of things. Humanism will be the theme of the service.
Rabbi Eva Goldfinger will visit the congregation and conduct the service for the evening. Rabbi Goldfinger was ordained as a Humanistic Rabbi in 2005 and has served the Oraynu Congregation For Humanistic Judaism in Toronto, Canada since 1988. Rabbi Goldfinger comes from a traditional upbringing and has become a spoke person for Humanistic Judaism, actively building our movement and developing the philosophy and practices of Secular Humanistic Judaism. She regularly conducts weddings and funerals and is a dynamic educator for children and adults. We are very fortunate to have her visit us for this Shabbat and be out guest rabbi. Join us for an intellectually stimulating and exciting evening!
