About The Birmingham Temple

The Birmingham Temple provides Jewish education, celebration and community as part of the world movement of Humanistic Judaism. Humanistic Jews believe that Judaism is the culture and civilization of the Jewish people and that this culture was created by the Jewish people over many centuries; that a Jew is someone who identifies with the history and culture of the Jewish people; that men and women have, and have always had, the power and responsibility to shape their own lives independent of supernatural authority; that the path to truth is found in an open mind; willing to follow the evidence wherever it may lead, that morality should promote personal freedom and human dignity; and that the freedom and dignity of the Jewish people must go hand in hand with the freedom and dignity of every human being.
The Birmingham Temple provides Humanistic Jews with the opportunity:
- To be part of a congregation that supports the beliefs and commitments of Humanistic Judaism.
- To welcome those who by birth or by choice identify with the history, culture and fate of the Jewish people.
- To participate in meaningful experiences of culture, celebration, education and community life that connects you to the Jewish past and links you to the Jewish future.
- To experience the holidays of the Jewish calendar - the High Holidays, Hanukkah, Pesach, Shabbat and others - with Hebrew songs, poetry and philosophic reflection.
- To celebrate the joyous life cycles of birth, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, Confirmation and Marriage.
- To provide funeral and memorial services that protect the dignity and memory of those who have died.
- To enable your children to learn Hebrew, Jewish history, culture and the ethics and values of Humanistic Judaism at the Birmingham Temple School of Cultural Judaism.
- To enjoy the many cultural and social events that are an integral part of The Birmingham Temple culture.
